Gwen Stefani: “Magic’s in the Makeup”

I was looking for a piece of music for setting the mood during the visuals of the funeral, marches, and church service. It’s pretty hard to find something that works well for all of them.

A group of Gwen’s friends had contacted Stefani via her fan club, and asked her to sing at the funeral. Stefani had other commitments and couldn’t. However, when she sang at the Shoreline she gave the family backstage passes. Sylvia and her family got to meet the person of their child’s chosen namesake. Later Sylvia passed on the agent’s name to me. I contacted him and asked for the rights to use Ms Stefani’s song “Magic’s in the Makeup” in the movie. He agreed to let me show the movie at festivals and produce DVDs as long as it was not used for profit. I think that was very generous of Stefani and her band. I am very greatful to the agent that arranged it and Gwen’s friends that made the initial contact.

Lars Hidde: “Elegy to Gwen”

"I needed an inspired musical score for the visuals of Gwen growing older and the explanation of the death...a musical introduction that suggested something bad was about to occur. Lars created the emotional subtext, a haunting melodic score "Elegy to Gwen" that expressed all our feelings perfectly. Lars' music simply moves me. I highly recommend working with Lars anytime-he made it very very easy for me."

Rebecca Croft-Bernstien “Amen”

Before I got a release from Stefani I was using music by Rebecca. I had asked her to write an original song for the movie under an incredibly short deadline. She came through with a song called Amen, just two days before the festival deadline. I integrated the song and sent the movie to the festival. Later when I got the release I was conflicted over what to do. Rebecca was a friend that had worked hard to create a song that I had asked her for. She was under tremendous stress meeting that deadline.  Yet Stefani was Gwen’s favorite and also the family. Since it was the family that I was making this movie for, I decided to go with Stefani. Rebecca has my deepest apologies and thanks.
