Unintended Consequences

This  animated documentary short examines how a series of unintended consequences result in five lives crashing together at a single point in time, on July 1st, 2015.

Synopsis

A great deal of press coverage has blanketed the Bay Area recently, regarding the senseless murder of Kathryn Steinle on Pier 14 in San Francisco, in which Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant, is accused. It has become a politically charged international story, fueled by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Citing Robert Merton’s Theory of Unintended Consequences, the film spotlights San Francisco Sanctuary Laws, law enforcement handgun safety, and a rise in property crime attributed to Prop 47; all contributing factors in the series of events leading up to the shooting on July 1, 2015.

Filmmakers Michelle Prevost and Ilena Ferrer created “Unintended Consequences” as a commentary on the complexity of our socio-political culture, where modifications of laws and conventions created to effect positive change can have unanticipated, sometimes negative results. In this particularly complicated case, several seemingly unrelated series of events all came together at one point in time, unfortunately resulting in the needless loss of a human life.
